Weekly Mileage #123 and Lake Day

when there's only one escalator in town, it's a big deal. we may or may not have ridden up and down it a couple times.

Monday I spent more time on the treadmill. Sunshine went to a local lake for Scouts, where they did water safety and kayaking. We really like how many activities there are and how organized this troop is :)

Tuesday Sunshine went in for the top bands for her braces, but they ended up putting bigger spacers in instead. We'll go back in a month and they'll put the expander in. Apparently her teeth are moving faster than expected, so that can go in sooner than they'd originally thought.

Wednesday I spent some time on the treadmill. I'm not up for running that long yet, but I can at least walk it.

Thursday was our first day of school. We ease into things during August, so we don't hit all the subjects right away. Mostly because I never get around to ordering our new books until August... I still need to do a post about our last school year and another about the upcoming school year. Hint: two kids officially in school (and a third who thinks he's in school too)!

That night I went to Round Table, where I was awarded one of the knots I sent in my form for as part of my Wood Badge ticket. Now that I'm in YW, I can't attend Round Table very often, but our activity was moved from Thursday to Saturday, so it worked out.

Speaking of moving our activity, on Saturday we had a combined YW/YM activity at a local lake. I brought the boys so Mr M could go to work. I also brought our kayaks. I was in charge of the activity though, so while others used them, I did not. I was too busy keeping an eye on the boys. Though I was also apparently too busy to take photos, as I have none from the activity.

I'm finally consistently losing weight! I'm currently down 16 pounds from the first of the year. I think it's a combination of eating low carb, finally getting better quality sleep (which lowers cortisol), and Metaburn from Plexus. I even managed to lose a few pounds while road tripping, despite not eating as low carb as I should. I've been eating too many carbs since we returned though, and I need to get back on track with my eating so I don't undo all my hard work.

Weekly Mileage
Monday- 2.25 miles walked on the treadmill
Wednesday- 4.02 miles walked on the treadmill
total- 6.27 miles

14 hikes towards #52hikechallenge
2.56 kayak miles towards #365milechallenge
73.53 outdoor foot miles towards #365milechallenge

GAPS v.2017 Week 8 Intro

turtles enjoying the beautiful weather Thursday while we were hiking

Today I had planned on just talking about how I fudged a little to make sure I fueled properly for my race. But when I got sick, I had to do some other things that aren't GAPS legal, so I need to talk about those as well.

But first, how I successfully fueled for a 5k race while doing GAPS so that I also got a PR (personal record).

I had a large handful of gluten free pretzels on Thursday and a few more on Friday. I'm not supposed to be eating complex carbs or starches, but I figured the starch content of the pretzels was my best bet in making sure my body had the energy reserves it needed for the race. This brand of pretzels has corn starch, tapioca starch, and arrowroot starch as the main ingredients, so I guess you could maybe say they're grain free if you're interpreting corn starch as a starch rather than a grain.

I made muffins Friday afternoon for the kids to eat the next morning so the babysitter didn't have to cook anything for them. This particular recipe is made with cassava flour (a starch from the cassava root, processed in a slightly different way than tapioca starch, which also comes from cassava root), as well as a bunch of dried fruits and nuts. I had one muffin Friday evening and another Saturday as I got ready for the race. I didn't have any intestinal issues (which is always a concern before a race), and I had a lot more energy than I thought I'd have.

I'm super excited that my fueling worked as well as it did and will probably do the same thing before my next race (not yet sure when that will be though- I need to plan out my race calendar still).

***********************

As I've mentioned before, we've been fighting some crud the last couple weeks. I feel like I had a lighter case of it at first, probably because of strengthening my immune system with GAPS. However, the boys were determined to share all their plague germs with me, and in the end I succumbed. I started running a fever Friday afternoon, so I took some ibuprofen then and again in the morning.

That seemed to take care of the worst of the symptoms at the time, so I went ahead and ran the race. I think that running while congested, in the cold air, was just more than my body could handle, and my eustachian tubes got blocked. This led to a middle ear infection (rare in adults, according to my doc), renewed fever and chills, sore throat, and massive ear pain.

I took Aleve Saturday and Sunday to try to knock out the pain and fever, but only with minimal success. I didn't even attempt going to sleep Sunday night because the ear pain was so bad. I just lay in bed with a hot rice pack on my ear and around one in the morning the pain finally started to let up. I thought the pain killers had finally kicked in, except that inside my ear felt very moist. With the pain level a lot lower I was able to sleep.

The next morning my ear felt odd and my hearing was off- everything was echoing. I was able to get an appointment to get it looked at and the doctor confirmed that my eardrum had indeed ruptured, as I'd suspected, but that it was just a small hole and should heal without any issues. If the rupture had been due to trauma, the healing process would have been more involved. He was concerned about the wide variety of bacteria being brought in by the kiddos (who are determined to share everything with me), so he prescribed an antibiotic to clear things up. No strep throat though, which I was concerned about, so I'm happy.

I also took River to the doctor to get his ears and throat looked at. Turns out his eardrum had ruptured almost a week earlier (I recognized the signs after the fact), but it most have happened while he was sleeping since he never exhibited the amount of pain I was in. His ears are healing fine on their own, so no antibiotics for him.

Pain killers and antibiotics are not GAPS approved. But given the circumstances, I wasn't willing to suffer more than I already was. Luckily I've been taking probiotics for some time, though I will increase the amount that I take, as well as eat more yogurt in an effort to keep my intestines as healthy as possible. I will be staying on GAPS intro for longer to make up for whatever the painkillers and antibiotics are doing to me.

Being on GAPS for two months has probably put me in as good a place as possible for doing a round of antibiotics.

GAPS v.2017 Week 7 Intro

Ocean tried climbing the jungle gym, but he's just not tall enough :)

I'm still hanging out in Intro phase, but I learned a valuable lesson this past week. My sugar addiction has not been kicked yet and I can't fudge even a little.

Depressing, but good to know, I suppose.

I ate some non-GAPS legal chocolate and it wasn't pretty. If I have a little chocolate, I want more. Especially if I know there's more somewhere in the house.

I had gotten complacent and thought I could handle it.

I can't. So I've got to stick to the easy-to-digest GAPS foods and avoid all temptations. It makes for boring eating, but it's what I need to do for now.

GAPS v.2017 Week 6 Intro

recent beaver signs found on last week's hike

I've been doing GAPS for 6 weeks now, which is as long as I managed last time.

I've lost 14 pounds in 6 weeks, which I am still super excited about.

The last couple weeks I've been thinking about changing habits. It can be hard to change ingrained habits, but I'm slowly getting there.

I'm paying more attention to those times I feel like snacking and trying to identify why I feel like snacking. Overall, the desire to snack is receding, though if I'm particularly stressed or tired the snacking desire does go up.

I'm also eating less. When I first started GAPS I was eating more meat and veggies to make up for the drastically reduced carbs. I'm no longer always feeling hungry or having a growly tummy, so it's easier to eat less.

I'm still hanging out in intro, but I have added small amounts of dairy and fruit. I don't feel the need to move on just yet, and I'm paying attention to what my body tells me.

GAPS v.2017 Week 5 Intro

pretty Valentine's tulips

Much to Sunshine's disgust, there was no Valentine's candy in our house this year. Partly because I've been super busy and forgot about getting any for the kiddos (oops), partly because I didn't want any candy in the house. I'm doing better about avoiding tempting foods, but if it's sitting around the house I can see it becoming a problem.

I'm continuing to lose weight- 12 pounds so far! I'm really working at identifying when I want to snack and why I'm feeling like I need to eat something. This is actually more a Whole30 thing than a GAPS thing, but it applies because snacking when I'm stressed or tired is an issue for me and I'd like to make it a non-issue.

As I mentioned Monday, Thursday I felt pretty crummy after my long run. I'm hoping that was a one-off, but we'll have to wait and see.

I'm still hanging out in the early phases of GAPS Intro. Any time I try to add something I end up not feeling great, so I take it back out. I'm ok with it though, since I want to experience as much healing as possible and what I'm eating really affects whether my body is healing or attacking itself. Slow and steady wins the race.

GAPS v.2017, Week 1 Intro

we're a bit waterlogged from all the rain we got over the weekend

I've known for months that I needed to get back on GAPS, but I've been putting it off. First there was Halloween coming up, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas and New Years. All involve chocolate and yummy food that I didn't want to give up.

And I was still breastfeeding Ocean, and didn't want to mess with that. But lately he's been losing interest, and my milk supply has been drying up. He turned 18 months old last week, which is 6 months longer than Sunshine nursed and 2.5 months longer than River nursed. So I'm ok with him being done. This puts me at just over four straight years of being pregnant and/or nursing- not something I would have predicted happening even two and a half years ago.

I've also been gradually removing one food after another from my diet over the last few months: potatoes, rice, corn... Even chocolate had to fall by the wayside. I was becoming so sensitive to it that if I ate any after 3 pm I couldn't sleep that night :(

Having to give up chocolate was the last straw.

I was already so close to GAPS, that it wasn't that hard to start. The hardest part was talking myself into just starting. I only had to cut out sweet potatoes, my grain free bread (which was starting to be problematic as well), and dairy. I do miss cheese and yogurt, but I'll be able to add homemade cheese and yogurt back in soon.

I was reviewing my notes from the first time Sunshine and I did GAPS, more than four years ago, and it was a very different experience from this time around.

It's a lot easier this time.

Part of why I put it off so long was because I knew it wouldn't be easy and I wasn't looking forward to all the side effects: brain fog, crankiness, feeling crummy, food cravings, and so on.

So it was a pleasant surprise to realize that's not the case this time. I had a touch of brain fog early on, but nothing bad, which is really good since I've got lots of work to get done and need my brain working properly. I haven't had any real cravings, though I got close Sunday night when we got home late from church. I made the perfect grilled cheese sandwiches for the kids' dinner before starting on my soup, and I was so hungry that I was seriously tempted to snitch half of Ocean's sandwich. I restrained myself and made sure there was lots of fat in my soup, and I was fine.

Another thing that struck me when I reviewed my notes was that I didn't mention weight loss. I have no idea if I lost weight then. I must have since GAPS can be low carb and I mention at one point that I was struggling with the effects of being too low carb, but I didn't track that weight loss.

This time I am, since a major goal of doing GAPS is to finally lose weight. That will only happen if I heal the damage to my intestines and get my PCOS under control. GAPS will help with the first and should also help with the second.

In my first week of GAPS, doing Phase 1 of the Intro diet, I lost 5.8 pounds. Woohoo! I don't expect that to be the case every week, but it was definitely a good start. I'm sure most of that weight loss came from drastically lowering my carb intake.

I originally planned on just spending three days per phase of the Intro diet, but two days in I decided to stay on the first phase for a full week. I was feeling good and felt like it would be a good decision, so I did it. Last time we spent a full week on each phase, but I'm not sure that will be the case this time. I'll decide during each phase how long I want to spend on it; a minimum of three days but probably not more than a week.

New Goals for 2014

My word for this year is

Balance replaces discipline, which was the word for the last couple years, and which I didn't really achieve, though I did try. The two words are related, so I feel like it's a continuation of one to the other.

I haven't updated my goals and their progress since the end of June. I achieved some of them, but the rest got lost by the wayside when I got pregnant. The new year is a good time to re-evaluate and update my goals. Writing them down does help me to remember them and not just let them slide.

This year I'm focusing on four areas: running, food, finances, and time management.

Running
I talked about my postpartum exercise plans and the races I want to run here. Since then I've had to change things up a bit. Mr M now has a training thing that overlaps the spring half marathon I'd planned on running. Logistics are such that I'm not doing it without him around to help with the kiddos. I found a couple other half marathons in the area, but they're earlier in the year and I don't want to run a half without properly training for it.

In changing up my race schedule, I've also added some more races. If I'd been able to do the New Year's Day 5k, I'd have a race scheduled every month this year! Having monthly races scheduled will keep me motivated in my training and help me work towards my fall half marathon. I'd really like to be properly trained and prepared for it and I think the monthly races should help me stay on track. The races listed below without links are the ones I haven't done before, except the half marathon. Since we'll travel to get to that one, I don't mind linking to its site.

January-      New Year's Day 5k
February-    4 mile (give or take a bit) Mud Run
March-        a 5k
April-          an 8k
May-           a 5k
June-           a 5k
July-            a 10k
August-       4 miler
September-  Great Smokey Mountains Half Marathon
October-      Halloween 5k
November-  Turkey Trot 5k
December-   a 5k

And looking ahead to 2015:
January-      New Year's Day 5k
February-    4 mile Mud Run
March-        a 5k, 10 miler, or a local half marathon
April-          an 8k or a local half marathon
May-           a 5k
June-           a 5k
maybe a Ragnar Relay race in June or September and a semi-local half marathon in November

Food
Now that The Little Mister is here and the holidays are over, it's time to get the food situation back in order. I haven't been feeling too bad with how I've been eating, but it's only a matter of time before it does start causing problems. So it's time to clean up the bad habits I picked up since the morning sickness started almost a year ago. The two major issues: sugar and grains. The Little Miss and I need to make more progress healing our intestines, so we're going back on GAPS. Since I'm nursing and have to be careful about detoxing and going too low carb, we'll skip GAPS Intro and go straight to full GAPS.

I indulged a bit too much over the holidays and my weight has crept back up, so I'm hoping that eliminating grains and sugar will jump-start my weight loss. I really want to get my weight down where it should be. It will be a challenge to balance nursing, running, and GAPS, but the end result of better health will be worth it.

Mr M works with a bunch of guys who are paleo.  Since he wants to lose some weight and make things a bit easier on us (like not eating things we can't have in front of us), he's going to give it a try. Full Gaps is similar to paleo, so we'll be mixing the two up, seeing what works for us.

One key to making this work is planning out our meals. I've done this in the past with great success, but it got dropped when I stopped cooking last year. I've started planning menus again and am remembering how nice it is not to be staring in the frig at 5 pm, wondering what to make for dinner.

Finances
We've been piddling around for several years now, saying "we'll get out of debt this year", but not managing it. This is the year it actually happens. We've had a loose budget for years, but now we're tightening it up and tracking everything more closely so we can eliminate unnecessary spending. Our food budget (or lack of one) is a big offender.

We've been shopping at Whole Foods, Kroger, Sam's, Target, Amazon, our CSA, and a local online grocery service. It all adds up really quick.

I'm changing things up so that our bulk dry goods, including TP and diapers, come from Amazon. Their "Subscribe and Save" option allows you to auto-ship certain items every month, every other other month, etc. If you have 5 or more items in each month's order, you get a 20% discount on the overall cost. In addition, Amazon occasionally offers coupons for some of the items, and the coupon can be stacked with the discount.  We have a Prime account, so shipping is free, and the items end up being about the same as we would spend in a brick and mortar store. Some months it's a little more, some months it's a little less, so it all averages out. The added advantage of not being tempted to buy things not on my shopping list as I wander through the store means we save even more more.

About a year ago we started buying from a local CSA, but we were still purchasing items from Whole Foods and Kroger. We recently found a local online grocery service that sources items from Whole Foods and small local stores and producers. So now we purchase pastured eggs, grass-fed meats, and some fruit and veg from the CSA, and the rest of our fruit, veg, grass-fed dairy, grass-fed meats, and any other food items we need from the online grocery service.

The CSA delivers to our house once a week and we pick up our order from the grocery service at a location that's only 10 minutes from our house (about 20 minutes closer than Whole Foods). They deliver to that location twice a week, and deliver to other locations in the area on other days, so we have options if we need something but don't want to make the trek to Whole Foods. The interesting thing is that some of the items that come from Whole Foods are cheaper this way than in the store. The service itself is free (they make their money from the grocery stores and producers), and again, I'm not buying things not on my list, plus I'm spending less on gas, so we're saving money.

Organizing our shopping around Amazon, the CSA, and the grocery service requires actual menus and planning, which helps our budget and helps me be more organized. My goal is to avoid stores as much as possible, so planning ahead and being organized is a must.

We've enjoyed them, but we'll be selling the truck and trailer and buying Mr M a more economical vehicle. The truck gets atrocious mileage when used for commuting (which Mr M does), and we've decided we want to upgrade the trailer to a small RV. It'll take us a couple years to save up for the RV, but since we need to sell the truck, we need to sell the trailer too. All this will allow us to save money on gas and vehicle payments. The trailer is paid for but the truck isn't. When we buy a car for Mr M, we'll be paying for it outright. The money we save can then be put into savings for our future RV.

Time Management
Over the past couple years, my time has skewed a bit heavily towards projects around the house. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and the vast majority of what I wanted to get done is now done. This is a good thing since newborns are a lot more high maintenance than 7 year olds, and take up a lot more time :) Our adoption file is on hold till fall, but once TLM is 1 year old, we can reactivate our file. Depending on the timing, we could potentially end up with two little ones very close in age, which will further decrease my project time. So it was good that I was able to get as much done as I have the last year or so.

With the big projects finished, I now need to improve the balance between my activities. Schoolwork with LMS, caring for TLM, housework (which I dislike, so it gets pushed to the back burner), meal prep, church responsibilities, time with Mr M, projects (I still need to work on some things), running….

So, lots to work on, but I've started making baby steps on each of them, so the goals are totally do-able.

My Postpartum Exercise Plan

LMS smooching on her baby brother
he's not really upset, he just makes a lot of faces while sleeping :)

I didn't have a super-defined plan for how I'd get back in shape and lose the baby weight- unusual for me not to have everything planned out, I know.  But, I tore/badly pulled a groin muscle while pushing out LMS and it took a long time to heal- i.e., it took a long time for it to not hurt to walk.

So, I was waiting to see how the L & D went before making plans this time around.  This time there were no pulled muscles so the main holdup was waiting for the stitches to heal.

Oh yeah, and having the energy to exercise :)

LMS wanted to do the Halloween 5k again, and we'd planned on Mr M doing it with her while TLM and I spectated. Which meant that of course Mr M had drill scheduled that weekend. Seriously, I can't count the number of times this has happened, and it's very annoying.

So I put TLM in the carrier and walked the race with LMS. That made it the 6th race of the year, so I hit that goal, at least!

This race was a bit earlier than recommended (3 weeks postpartum rather than 6), but I justified it because I walked it instead of running it. Since I was able to run the day before giving birth, I'm confident that I can handle jumping back in to my workout schedule, but I'm not planning anything crazy or stupid. I'm just starting out by spending some time on the treadmill, gradually increasing the ratio of running to walking.

I wanted to start hitting the treadmill four weeks ago, but that week was a bit crazy and my energy levels still weren't where I wanted them to be. A week later, on the 11th, I gave it a go. After an early am feeding at 5, I headed downstairs to hop on the treadmill while TLM was in his post-nursing milk coma.

I had been falling back asleep after these early morning feedings, but I always woke up more tired. I've found that if I can just get out of bed and get going, I'm actually more energetic, even though I've had less sleep. Apparently my body is finally remembering that once upon a time (in high school) I used to be a morning person and now my sleep cycle can't handle going back to sleep.

I've also started using the Jungle Gym again to tone and strengthen my muscles. My abs are squadgy and I need to make sure my legs and knees don't have problems again.  I'm continuing to use the foam roller consistently (it made a huge difference while I was pregnant) and it has helped with sore muscles that have appeared with the increased workout intensity.

Last week I ran the Turkey Trot, almost 8 weeks after TLM was born. While I wan't in optimum running condition, it was a good opportunity to see where I'm at physically and what I need to be working on right now (hills and endurance). The Turkey Trot was the 7th race I completed this year, which is the most races I've done in one year since my high school cross country days. Yay me!

Now that the Turkey Trot is over, I'll settle into an actual training plan where I build my mileage and endurance while preparing for the New Years Day 5k.  From there, I'll continue building my mileage and endurance so I can run more races in the spring.
  • The Mud Run in February. I realized last year that this is a race that would be a lot easier with a partner, so I've asked a friend to run it with me.
  • A local 10 mile race at the end of March, which would be a good lead-in to--->
  • My big goal of a local half marathon at the end of April.
I'll see how those go and then plan my next races. I'd like to do:
If I manage to do all these races that'll put my total for 2014 at nine. I've tried to space them out and not over-do anything- there's always more races that could be run, but it wouldn't be beneficial. The main thing I have to be aware of is to train smart and avoid injury, or none of these will be happening.

********

I can't talk about my postpartum exercise plan without also talking about postpartum weight loss.

Don't hate me, but it only took a week to lose the baby weight. I was wearing my pre-pregnancy clothes the day after we came home from the hospital. {yay!}

Admittedly, I only gained 15 pounds, but I was surprised at how fast the weight came off. We didn't have an accurate scale when LMS was born, so I don't know exact numbers, but I think I gained about 25 pounds with her. I do remember it came off pretty easily, but not in a week. Unfortunately, once I lost the baby weight I couldn't lose any more.

This time I'm determined to get back into weight loss mode and get below my pre-pregnancy weight. Since I got pregnant while in the process of losing weight, my goal now is to pick up where I left off and finally get down to my target weight, which means I need to lose about 35-40 pounds.

What are some things you've done to lose weight after a pregnancy?

I've discovered a great new diet!

The secret?

Become allergic to almost everything you eat!

I've been having reactions to things I used to be able to eat. At first I thought it was contamination issues, but now I just think it's my body being even more stupid than usual.

These days I can't eat (among other things) ice cream, chocolate, canned refried beans, or corn chips. Even the chocolate chip cookies I made and the Betty Crocker gluten free brownies caused a bad reaction: extreme nausea followed by massive burning stomach pain and less than pleasant bowel movemnents. Oh yeah, and insomnia. Love that one. I haven't had problems with insomnia since the first couple years that I was sick, and I have not enjoyed it's reappearance.

Because of all the bad reactions, I've pretty much lost my appetite- I'm almost afraid to eat anything packaged for fear I'll have a bad reaction. While annoying on one level, it has been beneficial on another. I've stopped snacking on junk food completely and am truly eating healthier, and in less than two weeks I've already lost 5 pounds!

Last week I eliminated eggs from our diet to see if they were causing the problem. I've had problems with eggs in the past, so I decided to eliminate them first. I had hoped they wouldn't be the culprit because it's hard to do gluten free baking without eggs- egg substitutes are usually a starch, which throws off the delicate balance of gf flours and starches and liquids. Unfortunately, I ate some gluten free eggless muffins last week, and they still gave me problems.

The muffins had milk in them, so this week we've eliminated all dairy products, and I've been doing great! No reactions at all. However, this is a problem because we really like cheese and yogurt and ice cream. Maybe eventually we'll be able to add them back in. Not sure I can do the cheese substitute thing- soy cheese just sounds too disgusting and completely unappetizing.

LMS has been having some poop issues as well (they improved a bit when she went gf, but there's still something not right). I didn't notice an improvement last week, but I've seen a little this week. Hopefully I'll start seeing a lot of improvement in her soon.

Gluten free on vacation

I had fairly good success eating gluten free while traveling for 2 1/2 weeks. I prepared ahead of time and checked out websites of restaurants, and made a list of edible items-it's limited, but there is fast food I can still eat.

Some examples of fast food that I ate:
Taco Bell:
taco salad (minus the tortilla)- kinda gross, but I'm not a fan of taco salads to begin with (give me a chalupa any day!).

Wendy's: mandarin chicken salad, no noodles or sesame dressing (I used a little ranch)- quite good- I'm a sucker for mandarin oranges.

Wendy's: baked potato and chili- also pretty good. It was way too hot to be eating chili, but it tasted pretty good. The baked potato with sour cream and chives and broccoli (if you can find broccoli, it's not available in all markets) is good, but the bacon and cheese potato (also not available in all markets) is kinda gross- the bacon and cheese sauce both tasted kinda funny. I had a sour cream and chives potato and chili while everyone else ate Pizza Hut pizza, and didn't feel deprived.

McDonalds: fruit and yogurt parfait (no granola), apple dippers, and side salad- were ok, but I would have preferred some protein. Those 3 items are pretty much the only gluten free items, other than ice cream, at McDonalds. Very sad.

Burger King: had a tender grill chicken sandwich minus the bun- it was ok, but it was just the chicken, some lettuce, and a tomato, no condiments. It came with a bun, so I had to go back and tell them I couldn't eat it because of the wheat. One of the girls working there said it was cornmeal dusted, there was no wheat. Umm, I'm pretty sure it's made of wheat. Maybe she was thinking of sesame seeds? They fixed it without any further problems, though.

Carl's Jr.: low carb burger and fries- pretty good. I ordered the criss cut fries because I thought they were ok, but when they arrived, I realized there was some coating on them. I ate them anyway, but I shouldn't have. The natural cut fries are ok, though. The low carb burger is very messy.

Food while camping:
I brought gluten free pancake mix and mixed up a few pancakes for myself every morning and cooked them in my own pan (avoiding contamination). I also brought gluten free noodles for spaghetti night and gluten free crackers to eat with meat and cheese or tuna for lunch.

I've noticed I have a lot fewer blood sugar problems since going gluten free. I can eat less protein without feeling crappy, which I haven't been able to do for years. This is a good thing, since I didn't eat as well as I should have on the trip, but I still felt pretty decent.

Despite not eating as well as I should (too many Ghiradelli chocolate peanut butter squares (yum!) while traveling and too many gluten free s'mores (carefully tear a marshmallow in half, place a square of chocolate in the marshmallow, close, carefully skewer, and verrry carefully toast- yummy!), I still managed to lose another 3 pounds. Now that vacation time is over, I need to buckle down and eat more fruits and veggies and exercise more regularly so I can lose more weight more quickly.

A day on the water

Exercise log:
Yesterday morning I helped my dad mix and pour cement for a concrete pad that the air conditioner compressor will sit on. By the time we were done, it was too hot to go running. Luckily it cooled off in the early evening and I was able to go for a 3 mile run/walk before the rain moved in. The run felt good, but I definitely prefer running in the morning.

This morning we went to a local reservoir to do some boating with friends from church. Mr. M managed to get up on a kneeboard and I almost got all the way up. The water was just too choppy from all the other boats in the water. We also took turns being pulled in a tube behind the boat. We had LMS and Mr. M's 5 year old niece with us, and I took LMS and Mr. M took his niece out in the tube. We went nice and slow on those turns, and the girls had fun. Overall, it was an enjoyable time, and I managed to get a little bit of a workout while trying to get up on the kneeboard.

Coming back in after several hours on the water. The dogs enjoyed the ride too.

Weight loss:

I've lost another 3 pounds, for a total of 13 pounds. This is just awesome, since it's been soo long since I was able to lose any weight. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of comparing where I am now to where I was when I got pregnant with LMS, and I still have another 20 pounds to go till I reach that point. Kinda depressing. Although, once I reach that point, I only need to lose another 30 pounds to get down to my ideal weight for my height and bone structure. I'm making progress, which is so much better than continuing to slowly gain weight.

Gluten free:
I'm loving the side effects of being gluten free. Not only do I no longer have my body constantly telling me to eat (in an effort to get the nutrients it needs), and have finally started losing weight, but I just feel so much better. I have more energy- physically and mentally; I'm thinking a lot clearer- my brain is slowly de-fuzzing and I've even managed to come up with some reasonably creative ideas for singing time in Primary the last couple weeks. Yesterday I managed to be quite productive, even later in the evening when I used to hit my 'done' point.

Project progress:
I finished sewing LMS' dress, which really was a quick and easy project since the it was just a panel of fabric that had to be sewed together. The hardest part was figuring out some sleeves- I'm not a fan of spaghetti straps/ribbon ties/what-have-you- I wanted some real sleeves. The ones I made turned out pretty good, but I'm not completely convinced that they look good.

In addition to helping with the cement, sewing LMS' dress, and running, I also did laundry, paid bills, ran some errands in town, cleaned up and put away my sewing stuff, and sorted through a shopping bag full of misc. papers that were on my desk at one point, then shoved into a bag and chucked in a corner of our already overcrowded closet. Things are neatly filed away now, and all that's left to do is put away laundry and vacuum the thread bits off the floor (I make a mess when I sew).

I've got my sewing projects done for now, which is good since everytime I need to sew something I have to haul everything out of the cupboard and set it up on my computer desk. I will be so happy when I can have a dedicated sewing area!

Projects for the coming week:
* Mailing items I sold on ebay (the auctions close this weekend) once they've been paid for.
* Visiting teaching- we're leaving Friday afternoonish and will be gone till the end of the month, so I only have a few more days to get our visits done.
* figure out packing list and shopping list for trip
* finish making list of gluten free items available at fast food restaurants
* go shopping for items needed for trip
* make sure car and trailer are ready for trip (tires, oil, maintenance, etc)
* figure out best way to pack everything so we have room for everything
* do family pictures and LMS' 3 year pictures (a little late, I know...)

Fun with Photoshop

Like my new blog design? I did it all myself, using photoshop. The only thing that I didn't come up with is the font (2peas scrapbook), which I got from twopeasinabucket.com. I think it's a really cute font!

I figured out how to do the polka dots, which I used for the background, and I finally figured out how to use drop shadows effectively. It only took me about two weeks of searching on the internet and reading tutorials and trying different things, but I think I was fairly successful. My brain seems to be working better these days, now that I'm not eating gluten (yay!).

The only problem is that I'm not real happy with how blurry my polka dots are on the side. They weren't that way originally- I think it happened in the uploading/making it fit process. They're supposed to be clean and clear like the ones in the header. I need to do some experimenting to see if I can figure out what happened and how to keep it from happening again. I also need to see what I can do about changing the font on my headers. I don't think it'll be too hard, but it's late and I'm not going to mess with it tonight.

The next thing I want to figure out how to do is make embellishments to add to my blog header and background. That will take some more research and experimentation, though.

Ok, I admit I have this morbid fascination with the bruise on my arm. It's so big and ugly! Here's what it looked like last night. I went to the chiropractor today and she saw my bruise and told me to put arnica on it to help the bruise heal. Apparently with a bruise this size, scar tissue can form in the really yellow parts. Sure don't want that happening...

Now that I've got the blog stuff mostly figured out, I need to finish it up and then get back to sewing. I need to sew the dress for LMS still, and I want to sew some drawstring bags to store our bike helmets and my bike shoes. They're all tossed into the back of the bike trailer right now, and my inner OCD is cringing at the disorderliness. Also need to get thank you's for bday presents done and pictures hung on the wall. And when I'm done with that, I need to dig out our cooler (from the very back of our 24' storage container) and sort the things I've put aside to sell (an ebay pile and a garage sale pile). So much to do...

Oh yes, I almost forgot! I weighed myself yesterday morning and I've lost another 3 pounds, for a total of 10 pounds so far. Yay!!

I've lost some weight!!

I weighed myself yesterday morning, and lo and behold, I've lost 7 pounds! Woohoo!!!

I haven't lost weight since giving birth to LMS (the baby weight came off quickly, but nothing else), and the 10 pounds I lost (doing Atkins) just before getting pregnant with her. I've been gradually gaining weight for the last 5 or 6 years without being able to lose it, no matter what I tried.

So whether the weight loss is a result of the meds I'm on or the GF diet or a combination of the two, I don't know. However, it happened, and I have great hopes that I will be able to continue to lose weight in the coming months.

7 down, 53 more to go...
