Driveway Work, Part 1

This is what our upper driveway looked like on Thursday before we got started. There's wood behind the Bobcat that needed to be moved, a large mulch pile next to the RV that also needed to be moved, and the mound in the center leftover from the tree we took down needed to be leveled. In front of the cars is the future carport area that needs to be cleared and prepped.

These logs were left where they lay because they were too heavy for me to manhandle into the lawn tractor trailer. It was a pretty simple task to load them into the bucket of the Bobcat and move them down by the treehouse. After we spread the mulch, we'll set the logs on end to make a stepping log path in the woods.

The mulch pile is deceptive. It doesn't look too big until you consider that it's on a slope and is actually much taller. It was dumped by a local tree company last fall and this was the best place to put it at the time, even though we actually need the mulch on the other side of the house. We moved some of it by hand, but it was just too big a job to do that way. It went so much faster (and so much less sweat was involved) to move it with the Bobcat. The mulch is now in a pile between the treehouse and trampoline, partially spread around, partially smooshed into the ground. We'll have to finish spreading by hand, once the ground dries out. Not looking forward to that one....

Some logs were uncovered as the mulch was moved, so I used the chainsaw to cut them down to moveable chunks.

I also tidied up the top of a tree we felled that's staying where it is (you can see it in the second pic, behind the log chunks waiting to be moved). We hauled out the smaller, top branches and left the main trunk in place in the woods. There's still a couple of log pieces that need to be hauled away, but it now looks much tidier.

Then I tidied up the backside of the garden shed, where downed branches had been laying around for the last year. We'd had a couple big, dead branches cut off the big tree next to the shed when we had the tree next to the driveway taken down, but we left them laying where they fell. I forgot to take a before pic, but here's the after, looking much better.

I'm not super happy about how large our wood and brush pile is getting, but for now it can't be helped. One of these days we'll rent the biggest wood chipper available and run as much of the wood pile through it as we can. All the half-decayed logs should go through without any problems, which will leave a much smaller pile of green wood that needs to be burned.

I finally built boxes for our raised garden beds. We bought cedar fence pickets for the project last spring, but never got around to building the boxes or planting anything. We'll level the garden area with the Bobcat, which will make it much easier to get the beds uniform and level the first time.

The boxes are upside down- the corner posts will go in the ground to keep them in place. The pile of dirt will be used to help fill the boxes, but is currently in the way of where one of the boxes will go.

While I was doing all that, Sunshine and Mr M were taking turns hauling logs and mulch and digging out that mound in the center of the driveway. It ended up taking a full day to dig out the root ball in the center. We knew this might happen, but it was still frustrating. The nearly bald tires on the Bobcat didn't help speed up the project.

We now have a huge crater in the middle of the driveway.

They started to fill in the crater with the dirt they'd piled next to it, but still needed more to finish leveling the area. They had just started moving dirt from the carport area to the crater when a big storm moved in. A couple hours later another storm moved through. And the next afternoon (Sunday) we had another soaker. The high clay content of our driveway has never been so obvious. It's so wet and taking forever to drain and dry out.

That's as much progress as we made the first few days. I'll do another post soon with the rest of what we did.

Weekly Mileage #113 and Driveway Work

our driveway no longer looks like this

This week was a busy one. Monday was the last day of preschool for boys. They only went one morning a week, but it was a nice chunk of time for me to get stuff done. Errands, uninterrupted work time, whatever I needed to do I could do so much quicker by myself. The boys enjoyed it and Ocean will go back again in the fall, just on Monday mornings again. River will join Sunshine at our homeschool co-op.

Tuesday Ocean attended a nutrition and learning study with the neighbor boys. Basically they play all day and the students take salive samples (via a cord that the kids chew on) before they eat. There's five 3 year old boys in their study group, so they have their hands full. He also went Thursday and will go the next two Tuesdays.

I got my hair cut. I didn't wait quite as long as I did last time I got it cut, but it was definitely time. My hair was giving me headaches again, so it was time to cut and thin it. It really seems to do best at about shoulder length.

After we picked up Ocean from the nutrition study, we went to park day. We're averaging every other week, which is pretty doable. My goal is to be attending every week by the time school starts in the fall, and working up to it is much less daunting than trying to go every week after so long not attending.

Wednesday Sunshine had her pediatric endocrinology appointment. They ordered some bloodwork to check her thyroid and other things and some hand x-rays to see if her growth plates are still open. We're waiting on the results, but if they're all ok, then we'll go back in 6 months and re-evaluate. This may just be a case of Sunshine being a late bloomer. If her growth percentiles haven't improved in 6 months, then we'll start growth hormone treament. Really, it's about what we expected to happen.

We were supposed to have a Bobcat dropped off Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning, but it wasn't delivered until after lunch Thursday. When we contacted them to find out what was the delay, they had us on the schedule for Friday morning. When I had talked to them to make the reservation, they had said it would be delivered Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. Friday was never mentioned. At least they got it delivered on Thursday and Mr M was able to get a couple hours of work in.

I'll do another post about the work we're doing on our driveway and yard, but the short version is that we're cleaning up the rest of the wood from the trees we cut down last year, moving the pile of mulch, clearing the center of the driveway where the big tree was, and clearing the carport area. There's a few smaller projects planned for the yard, as well. Once all the clearing and leveling is done, we'll spread more asphalt millings.

Friday was Ocean's last day of speech therapy for this school year. He'll start up again in the fall, but most likely will not actually need to continue at that time since he's made so much progress.

We spent the rest of the day working outside, Mr M moving mulch and logs and me doing some chainsawing. And of course we're doing this when it's in the high 80s/low 90s. We seem to have skipped spring again....

the boys have had so much fun playing on the pile of millings

Saturday morning our asphalt millings were delivered and we spent the day working outside again. Sunshine and Mr M spent almost the whole day digging the root ball out of the center of the driveway (it was way more stubborn than we'd anticipated) while I did more chainsawing and finally built the boxes for the raised garden beds that I bought the materials for a year ago.

I also started stripping our cast iron skillets (I've only been meaning to do that chore for the last three years), but didn't quite finish because they were in such bad condition. We didn't get the seasoning right when we bought them years and years ago, and they haven't improved with age. I'll share more on that once I'm done with them.

Sunday morning Ocean becaume the first of our children to puke on me during sacrament meeting. He may be the third child, but he likes to be a trailblazer. He'd eaten half a pan of jello for breakfast (before I got up) and apparently it didn't sit too well (whooda thunk?). I noticed his face turning red and cheeks puffing up and asked him if he was ok just as the puke made its appearance.

I grabbed him, managing to keep the puke on him and me, and ran for the bathroom. Thankfully, it was just jello and didn't smell too awful, since we had to wait around for 10 or so minutes while the sacrament was passed, so I could go back in and grab my bag so we could go home and get cleaned up and changed.

Just a few minutes before that bit of excitement I'd been released from the Primary presidency and sustained as YW president. If I'd stuck around for the rest of sacrament meeting, I'd have had the opportunity to speak, but I missed out since we didn't get back to church until the second hour was starting (benefits of living 12 minutes from church).

I've only been in YW one other time. I was the Beehive teacher for about a year when I was pregnant with Sunshine and the first few months after she was born. I'm looking forward to getting to know the YW better (and spending more time with Sunshine) and implementing the new program at the end of the year. I'm sure it will be handy not having any pre-conceived notions about how thing should be done or thoughts of "but we've always done it this way". I kind of feel like that is part of why I was called: to help implement the new program. Rather like I was called as RS president when our ward was formed to get things up and running, and once that was done, I was released (and relieved).

Minimal mileage this week. Early mornings for activities and such have played havoc with my workout schedule. The latter half of the week I opted to get yard work done rather than exercise since I only have so much energy and need to be careful about how I use it. We have a deadline for all our yard projects since we're only renting the Bobcat for a week, so that takes precedence right now.

Hauling wood, stacking wood, and chainsawing did give me a good workout, even if it didn't result in  a lot of mileage. I didn't have my Garmin on, so I'm just putting a mile down.

Sunshine has had fun driving the Bobcat and has done a good job digging out rocks and stumps and moving dirt around

River made his bed, then came and grabbed my cellphone from me in my room. He came back a minute later and showed me this picture:

Weekly Mileage #112 and the Scout Camporee

foggy morning

Mr M picked up his CPAP Monday morning. It's taken a little time to get used to, but it hasn't been too bad. It does appear that he'll have to stay clean shaven as the CPAP doesn't stay in contact with his skin if his facial hair is too long.

Thursday Sunshine got two more baby teeth pulled. She has one baby tooth left, but it's loose and being pushed out, unlike the 11 total teeth she's had to have pulled over the last few years. We'll meet with the orthodontist in a month and see when she can get braces on and if she needs to have any of her adult teeth pulled (hopefully not).

Friday Sunshine and I went to a Scout Camporee a couple hours away. Saturday the Scouts worked on merit badges and they needed more female adults (two-deep leadership must include a female leader if there are girls present) for some of the merit badge classes. Sunshine decided to take photography, and they needed an adult female, so I volunteered to help with her class. I figured I might pick up some photography tips, and I think I'm a bit more clear on aperture and shutter speeds, so that's a win.

Friday night it rained, then lightning started moving in, so everyone had to go inside a nearby bingo hall. It was crowded and very noisy. Those kids had a lot of energy at 10pm. After the lightning moved on, we went back to our tents, but it rained for a good part of the night.

We woke up to a cool, foggy morning, though the fog burned off and it got really warm before the merit badge classes started.

This was my first time camping since my narcolepsy diagnosis. I tried to replicate my sleep routine as best as possible, but my sleeping pad just wasn't as comfortable as our mattress at home.  I didn't sleep as well as I'd hoped, so apparently, a comfortable sleeping surface is an integral part of my sleep routine, not just my weighted blanket, frankincense, and 7 hours of sleep.

I woke up several times because I wasn't comfortable, but I woke up another time because I heard a train go by. A really loud train. I'm lucky I only heard it once- others heard it a lot more times throughout the night.

busy train tracks right next to our campsite

Despite not sleeping as well as I'd like, I actually didn't have any problems staying alert on the drive home that evening. I was snacking on mixed nuts most of the drive, but I also had some dark blue sunglasses on, and they seem to help eliminate eye fatigue, which in turn makes me feel less sleepy.

I also worked on some necklaces for the boys' preschool teachers and Ocean's speech therapist. This week is the last week of preschool and speech therapy, so I thought I'd make something for them. Hopefully, it's something they will actually use, and if not, at least it doesn't take up much space (that's the minimalist in me talking).

I tried etching a design on aluminum stamping blanks, but apparently, bare aluminum can't be etched by the GlowForge. So I ordered some anodized aluminum dog tag blanks and they worked out. The design isn't etched into the metal, though. It's just etched into the anodized aluminum coating, which is why they have to be anodized for this to work. I added a little crystal bead dangle for bling, and packaged it in a little box with this quote. Their name(s) were on the bottom line (covered by string in this pic).

No mileage this week. Too much going on, and I'm still trying to balance my schedule and my energy levels to allow me to exercise adequately.

Weekly Mileage #111 and Fun in the Rain

I'm still working on getting up and moving and not overdoing things. Tuesday I didn't get up early enough to go trail running, plus I wanted something a little less strenuous, so I walked on the treadmill for half an hour.

After music lessons we headed to the park for the weekly meetup. We haven't attended regularly for some time, but I'm determined to get back in the habit. We were starting to be more regular in our attendance at the end of summer, but my broken foot and worsening narcolepsy symptoms moved it to the back burner.

It rained a bit while we were there, but not enough to get super wet. Ocean fixed that problem by standing under a drainpipe and making sure he got gloriously soaking wet. Thankfully I'd finally remembered to put towels and a change of clothes in the car before we left the house, so I was able to dry him off and change him before we went home.

Mr M had his followup sleep appointment after his sleep study. Turns out he needs a CPAP after all. He doesn't have sleep apnea yet, but he does have hypopnea, which is abnormally slow or shallow breathing (apnea is periods of no breathing). So now we're waiting on some insurance paperwork, then he'll go get fitted for one.

Wednesday Sunshine and I went to a friend's naturalization ceremony. Neither of us had been to one before and it was very interesting. Our friend has been working on the naturalization process for 19 years, but others had been working on it even longer. The judge talked for a bit, the applicants swore the oath of citizenship, then they were welcomed by staffers from various government officials. They were also given the opportunity to talk about their journey to citizenship and to thank anyone they wanted to. Only a few people took the judge up on this, but it was interesting to hear what they had to say. Definitely an experience to have if you've never been before. Every Fourth of July they have a naturalization ceremony at Monticello that we've thought of going to, but I usually run a 5k that morning if we're in town.

Thursday I did an easy 10 miles on my bike. I didn't get moving early enough for us to go hiking before we needed to be home.

We spent the afternoon at home, having the annual systems checks done on our house- electrical, hvac, and plumbing. We need to do some electrical work (which we knew) and we got a quote for getting the water pipes replaced. We've had three different leaks now, and we know we're going to have to replace the pipes before we sell the house. The question is whether we'll DIY it or pay someone else. The jury is still out on that one- it won't be cheap, but we may not have the time to do the work. They also tested our water to see if anything in the water was contributing to our pipe problems. The test found that our well water is more acidic than it should be, which is what's causing the joints to fail. So we'll need to install an acid neutralizer system before we do the re-piping. yay.

Thursday afternoon I also got a call from the RV repair place and it's every bit as bad as we thought it would be. They did suggest contacting the factory to see if they can do the job any cheaper, so now we're waiting to hear back from them.

That evening I met with the bishop for the interview portion of the "On my Honor" religious award for adult Scout leaders. That's done and now I just need to turn in the form for my Scouter's Training award. Once that's done, all 5 of my Wood Badge ticket items will be done! I was aiming to have them all done by April, so I'm only a smidge behind schedule. Given all the stuff on my to-do list, I'm pretty happy.

Saturday morning I ran 3.35 miles on the treadmill. I ran two of the miles, alternating walking and running. It's good to get my mileage back up (I've been hanging out at 2 miles for awhile), and now I need to increase my endurance so I can run longer distances without stopping. I have a 5k coming up the first Saturday in June, so it's time to buckle down.

Saturday afternoon Sunshine and River had their recital/session. It's not a traditional recital- the kids sit in a circle and play the different songs they've learned, which is more like an Irish session. If you know the song, you play along. If you don't know the song, you just sit there. Sunshine did a great job on the piano, playing melody for one song and rhythm (chords) for another while other students played fiddle and sang. River did great on the banjo and was so cute when he messed up on one song and had to start over. Mr M had drill this past weekend, so Ocean had to come with us, which is not what I would have preferred. After some initial fussiness and noise, he settled down and fell asleep on my lap partway through.

Sunday Funny

I recently opened up the drawer in the frig where I keep my low carb/keto food and found this. That would be a keto chocolate cheesecake muffin.

At first, I wasn't sure which of the boys did it. It's a small bite so it could have been Ocean, but he tends to leave food out that he doesn't eat. So maybe it was River, since it had been put back in the drawer?

Regardless of who did it, they were obviously disappointed.

I think they taste fine, but I will admit they are not at all sweet in the sense that we are all conditioned to. I've managed to adjust my tastes, so I think they're plenty sweet.

**After some questioning, Ocean admitted to being the culprit. He said it was yucky :)

Weekly Mileage #110 and the Delayed Easter Egg Hunt

Look at these adorable boys! Photo courtesy of their preschool teacher.

Monday I went for a trail run. This is the perfect time of year for it weather wise, though my allergies let me know they're still around. Totally manageable though- just itchy eyes and sneezing, and not bad enough to warrant allergy meds.

Our music teacher loves the music book I made for her and wanted some contact info to hand out to people who asked about the book, so I made a business card holder for my business cards to leave with her.

Tuesday I rode my bike for the first time in quite awhile. My bum let me know it wasn't happy, but it felt good to finally do some pedaling again. After music lessons we all drove Mr M to the VA hospital in the city for a cortisone shot in his back. He wasn't allowed to drive after the procedure, hence the need for me to be his chauffeur. It took longer than we expected, which shouldn't have been a surprise, but somehow was. The boys did quite well, all things considered.

Wednesday morning I was too tired to get on the treadmill before Ocean's speech therapy appointment, so it didn't happen. We did get a short hike in during nature group in the afternoon, so it wasn't a complete loss.

I was also too tired the rest of the week to exercise. Trying to get my sleep schedule and food and exercise back on track has its challenges, but since they help my symptoms if they're on track, it's worth the effort and frustration. Everything got off track when I got sick, and it's proving more challenging than I expected it would. More incentive to stay on track as much as possible next time I get sick. And more incentive to stay on track even when our schedule changes, like on our road trip this summer.

Friday the boys' finally had their preschool Easter egg hunt. It had been canceled the two previous weeks because of rain. The kids all had fun and the parents were glad to finally cross it off the to-do list :)

Sunshine's birthday was this week, so Friday night her best friend S came for a visit. Her family moved several years ago, but the girls stay in touch via Facetime and get together for their birthdays every year. This year that included a sleepover at our house, which they were super excited about. They actually showed a lot of restraint and didn't stay up super late. They had a great time and are already planning their next visit, at the end of summer, for S's birthday.

April Mileage

beautiful morning for a trail run

My April mileage was definitely low. That spring crud lasted way longer than I was ready for, and it's taken a lot of effort to get back to a good sleep schedule (I'm still working on that, actually) and to start exercising again.  One thing that the low mileage doesn't reflect is the physical effort of hauling wood and mulch, which I did on 3 or 4 different occasions. All that lifting and turning and twisting is more of a workout than I'm used to, though it does feel good.

April mileage:
0 treadmill workouts + 1 hike + 3 trail runs + 5 outdoor walks + 1 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 24.44 miles
52 hike challenge: 10 hikes
365 mile challenge: 70.0 bike miles + 49.31 outdoor foot miles + 11.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 130.46 miles

March mileage:
1 treadmill workout + 2 hikes + 1 race + 4 outdoor runs + 2 outdoor walks + 1 bike workout + 0 kayak outings = 46.02 miles
52 hike challenge: 9 hikes
365 mile challenge: 60.0 bike miles + 34.87 outdoor foot miles + 11.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 106.02 miles

February mileage:
1 treadmill workout + 3 hikes +1 outdoor runs + 1 snowshoe walk + 3 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 42.40 miles
52 hike challenge: 7 hikes
365 mile challenge:  50.0 bike miles + 18.00 outdoor foot miles + 7.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 75.15 miles

January mileage:
2 treadmill workouts + 4 hikes + 1 outside walk + 2 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 32.75 miles
52 hike challenge: 4 hikes
365 mile challenge:  20.0 bike miles + 8.3 outdoor foot miles + 4.45 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 32.75 miles
