Weekly Mileage #117 and More RV Work

Tuesday Sunshine went to Girls Camp. The stake camp director runs it and she already had all the adult volunteers she needed, so I didn't get to go. I'm planning on changing that for next summer, though honestly, I'd rather do girls camp as a ward than a stake. More work for us, but I think the experience would be better.

I worked on the RV some more, getting it ready for our upcoming road trip. I'll do a post with before and after pics when I have a bit more time. In the meantime, I picked up where I left off last week, and caulked where I had painted and wallpapered. Then, I wallpapered the side walls of the over-cab bed. I had just enough to do those spaces, with a bit of jigsawing and matching seams.

Then it was time to put everything back together. I brought the jackknife sofa, mattresses, and dinette cushions back into the RV. They'd been living in our library for the last month or so, so it was nice to finally clear that room out. I put the sofa back together and bolted it in place, the put the blinds back up.

I tidied up the water damaged areas in the kitchen, then constructed a new piece for the back of the dinette. It was super thin plywood that had cracked the first time someone leaned on it and it had been getting worse. I also built a shelf in the large hall closet to make better use of that space.

Friday night I went to girls camp for ward night and to bring girls home.

Saturday I started digging in the garden boxes but I stopped once the garden area was in full sun. I switched to spreading the mulch around the treehouse and trampoline, since that area was in the shade. It took some time, but it looks better and it's nice to cover up all that mud. Now we just have to wait for our next mulch drop off so we can finish covering the area.

see the mud puddle?

I also dug out the area at the end of the pipe that drains the condensation from the air conditioner. It's been a muddy mess this year (but not in previous years, and I' not sure why) and Ocean positively delights in standing in the mud puddle and rubbing mud all over his arms and legs. Every day. I don't mind a little mud, but this was getting excessive. So I dug a hole, put gravel in it, then rocks on top. Hopefully it will drain better than just the clay it was dripping onto before. Ocean tried to pull the rocks off so he could get to the water, so I had to set some ground rules. Mainly that he was NOT to pull the rocks off.

no more mud puddles!

I also put some log pieces on end in a circle around the treehouse. We'd hauled them down from the far side of the parking circle when we rented the Bobcat, but had just dumped them in a pile. I separated some of them out so the boys have a balance trail.

Spreading the huge mulch pile meant a lot of walking back and forth, and I logged a bit more than 4 miles in the process. I'm so sore from all the lifting, twisting, and carrying.

It was a hot and sweaty day, though the temperature was supposedly only in the 80s. I feel like I react worse to heat these days, a side effect of the narcolepsy, I think, since it's a fairly new reaction. I get tired more easily and my heart rate goes up more quickly. It's a bit discouraging and a contributing factor (among many) to why my mileage is still quite low. I'm still finding out how much I can do and still have energy for other things. It's not at the same spot as in the past. I definitely did too much on Saturday, but I really wanted to get that mulch pile spread before it settled any more, which makes it harder to spread. I did not finish the garden beds because I was just too tired and sore and did not have the energy to do anything more.

Being YW president is already more stressful than when I was RS president. Odd, since there's only about 2 dozen girls in YW, but all the drama seems so much more intense. And they're at such a vulnerable time of life- I feel so much more responsible for them than I did for the couple hundred women in RS.

Weekly Mileage #116 and the One Mile Race

Unlike last week, this week was not boring and we had several experiences of note.

Monday Sunshine went to the orthodontist. After five years, 11 teeth pulled, and two retainers, she finally has enough adult teeth to get braces. We'll put the top brackets on at the end of July, after we return from our road trip. We'll have to wait till her teeth move a bit before the lower brackets can be put on- right now her upper teeth would run into them. She does need two adult teeth pulled- there's just no room for them in her mouth. She'll also get an expander put in on top (I had one when I was in elementary school- I'm not sure why she didn't get one sooner- not enough adult teeth, probably).

Tuesday the kids and I went to the lake with our homeschool group and I finally logged my first kayaking mile of the year. I paddled Ocean around the lake, and then River paddled Sunshine's kayak for a bit. He picked it right up and did a great job!

Wednesday we had nature group and the kids had fun playing in the stream at a local park.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday I worked on the RV. I painted two walls white and I put white shiplap wallpaper on the walls of both slides. I'm not done yet, but it's amazing how much brighter the RV is just with those changes. Well, those and taking down the window valances that blocked 1/3 of the light coming in. The interior of many RVs can be cave-like because most manufacturers use a lot of browns (to hide dirt probably). Our trailer had white cupboards and light tan walls and felt quite airy. Our RV didn't have anything light colored in it before I started. I'll share before and after pictures once I'm done.

Saturday River and I also ran a 1 mile race. This particular race has been on my radar since I was working on my 40 by 40 goal, but it was always held on Sundays, so I'd never run it before. This year I noticed that it was on Saturday, so it was in the back of my mind when River asked if there was a 1 mile race we could do (he now wants to do a 2 mile race :).

walking back to the parking area

We walked a bit more than a quarter mile from where we parked to get to the start line, ran the race, which was all downhill, then walked back to the parking area, which was more than a mile and a quarter away and uphill. I wasn't expecting so much walking, but it was a good race and the walk back was actually really good for stretching tight muscles that have not seen nearly enough mileage lately.

beautiful scenery. can you see the log cabin off in the distance?

It was a gorgeous day for a run- partially cloudy, not too hot, beautiful surroundings. River and I ran the whole race (9:41 finish) and he placed first in his age group!

-----

I had the thought last night that one of the reasons I have my new calling (there's always many) is to help me grow a thicker skin. I tend to take things too personally and to worry about what others think and say, even though I have no control over such things. We're in the midst of a bit of kerfuffle involving parental expectations versus actual responsibilities of the leaders. Nothing major, and it's been an on-going issue, I just got dumped in the middle of it right off the bat.

In any case, thankfully my counselors are much better than I at letting things roll off them so I can learn from them, and we can spread the kerfuffle amongst us all, so no one person bears the brunt of it. I know that having a thicker skin is definitely necessary, especially as I venture into advertising my businesses. I know I will encounter trolls along the way, and hopefully it will be easier to ignore unknown people than people I know.

Weekly Mileage #115 and the Mud

Ocean's handiwork. Not the first, won't be the last. I just wish it didn't stain so badly.

This was one of those weeks where not a lot of note occurred. I worked on projects and work tasks and took care of the kiddos.

The main thing to note would be the amount of mud that has been tracked in the house and the amount of laundry I've had to do because Ocean <literally> rolls in the mud. So much mud...

Driveway Work, Part 2

After a stressful week of rain and work. It looks so much better now!

Last Saturday Mr M had gotten the root ball out of the middle of the driveway and started filling the hole, but was stopped from doing more by several rain storms.  Monday he started pushing logs around and clearing the carport site, but it was slow going due to all the wet mud and clay. The bald tires on the Bobcat meant he couldn't get traction and did lots of slipping and sliding in the wet clay. In fact, the Bobcat got stuck in the partially filled crater. We tried to pull it out with the CRV, but couldn't do it. We left it and hoped things would dry out overnight enough to get it out.

But, it rained in the morning. Again.
what our driveway looked like over the weekend

The mobile sawmill guy stopped by to look at the logs and see how much space we have, and he tried to unstick the Bobcat with his two-wheel drive truck, but he couldn't do it, either. We ended up using the RV to pull it out. The bigger engine and rear duallies did the job that the other vehicles couldn't.

Mr M called the rental place to complain about the bald tires. They sent out a tracked Bobcat for a 24-hour rental Tuesday evening, which meant there was lots of work to do in a short time. But we finally were making decent progress.

Mr M ended up having to dig out the mud from the crater and fill it with a mix of gravel and topsoil from the carport site. The clay mud was just oozing everywhere, so he dug it out and dumped it down the hill behind the RV. He eventually got the crater filled and the space fairly level.

As Mr M was spreading gravel around the driveway area, I caught a glimpse of shiny metal. I investigated and found the spoon Ocean had taken outside a few days earlier and lost. (Where'd you put it? I dunno.) Our silverware has been disappearing, so it was nice to get one back at least.

site of our future carport

He also pulled and rolled the logs to the side for the sawmill, then cleared the rocks and stumps, but ran out of time to level it as much as we wanted. We also didn't have enough gravel to put there, so we'll have to finish this area later. In the meantime, as the mud dries out we can start driving on it and compacting it.

shed ramp area

Mr M cleared out the dirt leading to the shed ramp. Hopefully, less will wash down the hill to the shed, but we need more gravel for that to actually be the case. He also leveled out the area next to the shed where we park the lawn tractor trailer, though that needs a bit more work. He was running out of time and didn't have time to finesse the job.

mulch area, with a bike that needs to be moved
the old dish is from the previous owners- we've never used it, so it got pushed out of the way

When we had a load of mulch dropped last fall, it was next to the RV, but that's not really a convenient location for us. I wanted it closer to where we actually use the mulch (the garden and play area), so we cleared a spot in the woods near the shed for trucks to back in and drop a load of mulch. I still need to make a sign to put on the tree at the back of the space.

garden area

Mr M leveled the garden area, but not quite as much as I'd hoped- time was such an issue. Despite that, it is so much better than before, and much less digging will be needed to get everything in place and reasonably level.

logs rolled to the side for milling, start of the lumber pile

While he was doing all that on Wednesday, the mobile sawmill guy came and I helped him turn 6 tree sections into a pile of lumber. It was hard work in 90* weather, but helping made the job go faster, which meant we paid less.

Despite the tree dying almost two years ago and the logs sitting on the ground for the last year, the wood is really wet. You can tell I was getting tired towards the end- the stacking wasn't nearly as neat and tidy. That wet wood is heavy!

The waste pile isn't as large as I was afraid it would be.

Saturday we re-stacked the lumber with stickers for spacing and put a tarp over it to let the wood dry out for a couple months. Once it's a bit drier we'll use it to build a ground floor for the treehouse (I've been wanting to for some time, just didn't have the time or the wood) and a house on the top floor (Sunshine's been campaigning for that for years). I'm not building in the heat of summer- been there, don't want to do it again- so we'll wait till the end of summer to do this.

I'll also finish the mantel piece then. I need to clean up the live edge and cut it to length, then we can finally install it on the wall. Which means we need to figure out what we're doing with the fireplace. I have ideas, but now that we can actually move forward with them, those ideas need to be fleshed out.

future mantel for our fireplace

There are so many huge rocks everywhere. Mr M started expanding the driveway circle a little just for a bit more turning space but came across a huge boulder that isn't going anywhere. It's not the first time either. There were several occasions where he had to keep digging deeper and deeper to get large rocks out of the way.  A backhoe would have been helpful but was not in the budget.

carport area beyond the cars, room for the trailers to be parked next to the cars and still out of the way

Despite the issues with the rain and the Bobcat, we did get so much done. There are some projects that will have to be finished with hand tools, but the hardest parts have been taken care of. Later in the summer we'll finish leveling the carport site and bring in more gravel.

Yes, Ocean is covered in dirt and barefoot. Always.

May Mileage

River likes climbing trees

My May mileage was on the pathetic side. I'm still trying to get my schedule figured out. How to balance enough sleep, taking care of my family, getting my work tasks done, and exercising has not been easy. More often than not, exercise is pushed aside in favor of other, more important things. I did get some extra workouts in while pushing logs around and hauling lumber, so there was some undocumented weight lifting this past month.

May mileage:
2 treadmill workouts + 1 hike + 0 trail runs +2 outdoor walks + 1 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 19.67 miles
52 hike challenge: 11 hikes
365 mile challenge: 80.0 bike miles + 54.26 outdoor foot miles + 15.87 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 150.13 miles
April mileage:
0 treadmill workouts + 1 hike + 3 trail runs + 5 outdoor walks + 1 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 24.44 miles
52 hike challenge: 10 hikes
365 mile challenge: 70.0 bike miles + 49.31 outdoor foot miles + 11.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 130.46 miles

March mileage:
1 treadmill workout + 2 hikes + 1 race + 4 outdoor runs + 2 outdoor walks + 1 bike workout + 0 kayak outings = 46.02 miles
52 hike challenge: 9 hikes
365 mile challenge: 60.0 bike miles + 34.87 outdoor foot miles + 11.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 106.02 miles

February mileage:

52 hike challenge: 7 hikes
365 mile challenge:  50.0 bike miles + 18.00 outdoor foot miles + 7.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 75.15 miles

January mileage:
2 treadmill workouts + 4 hikes + 1 outside walk + 2 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 32.75 miles

Weekly Mileage #114 and June 5k

River has my dark brown eyes :)
he's totally cheesing here, though

We had so much rain over the weekend which slowed down our driveway project, but I'll post more on that later this week.

I ate a s'more Memorial Day evening. I know better, but did it anyway and paid for it the next day. I felt so crummy. Reactions like that are making it easier to stay away from sugar though. It's just not worth feeling crappy.

In between all the work we were doing with the Bobcat, we had a mobile sawmill come in and mill the logs from the dead oak tree we had taken down last year. They've been sitting on the ground for the last year, but there was less waste than I thought there'd be. We now have a stack of lumber to finish building the treehouse (a ground floor level and an actual house on the top level) and a mantel for our fireplace.

first planks from the first log

There are some nice wide planks that I want to build something cool with, but I need to figure out what. I'll probably save the nicest pieces once they're dried and store them till I come up with something. We'll need to get a planer though, as this is just rough cut wood. It'll be fine for the treehouse and mantle, but not for building a piece of furniture.

Thursday Mr M took the kids to Busch Gardens, where they all had lots of fun. I stayed home and tried to work through some really high anxiety levels that were making me unable to deal with life. I haven't felt that bad in a really long time, and I think it was the result of several factors.

I was super stressed out about the Bobcat situation (more on that in the driveway post later this week) and the delays in getting our projects done within the time available. I also think all the noise from the machinery running for so many days was just more than my HSP (highly sensitive person) system could handle (noise has always been a trigger for me). I was wearing ear muffs, but it wasn't enough to completely block out the noise of the Bobcat and the sawmill. Add in stress about the mud that was EVERYWHERE (including every room in the house), feeling physically crummy as a result of eating that s'more on Monday, and it was a recipe for disaster.

the boys have sure enjoyed the mud
they have literally rolled in the mud puddles

So I stayed home and tried to minimize stimuli and focus on lowering my anxiety levels. They'd been worsening for several days, but Thursday was definitely the worst. It took all day, but by nighttime I was finally feeling functional and back on an even keel.

Friday I finally finished my last Wood Badge ticket item. I'd hoped to be done by the end of April, but allowed other things to take precedence, so it didn't happen. All I need to do now is make sure all my materials are organized and email my counselor so we can figure out when I'll get my beads.

I heard back from the pediatric endocrinologist. Sunshine's thyroid and hormone levels all look good, so nothing to worry about there. The x-rays of her growth plates put her bones at about an 11-year-olds, which explains the delayed entrance to puberty and slower growth. We'll go back in 6 months and see if she's started growing by then.

Saturday morning River and I ran a 5k. This was my 8th year in a row running this race. I haven't been putting in the mileage I should have, but I was also accommodating his pace, so it was the slowest finish I've had yet on this course. It was hot and sweaty like it always is, but not as bad as it's been in the past- much more manageable this time.

hot and sweaty after the race

2019  44:26, with River
2018  40:21, just me, but so out of shape
2017  33:46, just me!
2016  39:21, pushed Ocean in the jogger
2015  41:19, pregnant with Ocean (34 weeks)
2014  38:11, pushed River in the jogger
2013  40:02, pregnant with River (23 weeks)
2012  39:23, pushed Sunshine in the jogger

On the way home he asked when my next race would be (a four mile race at the end of August). Then he asked if there was any one mile races, and I remembered that I'd seen one advertised for a couple weeks for now. He said he wanted to do it, so when we got home I looked it up and we'll be doing a one mile race in two weeks.

a recent notebook I sold: lined paper and a snap-closing flap

Despite all the anxiety issues I dealt with this week, it was a good one. We ended up under budget on our driveway projects and sawmilling (unheard of, I know!), my Etsy shop sales are picking up, and my RV ebook is being included in a travel bundle in July! I'll receive a commission on sales, but it will also introduce my website to a large audience that may not already be aware of me.

Sunday Funny

The boys are forever leaving half eaten apples around the house. Ok, it's mostly Ocean who does it, but River does as well, just not as frequently.

After we got the computers moved from the kitchen table to the desk, I found this stash of apples on the desk (this is the week I was painting the dresser, if you can't tell). And a string cheese wrapper for good measure. Little boys....
