Weekly Mileage #109 and the Morning of Mulch

little boys playing with bricks (not sure what's up with Ocean's expression and hands...)

Since I worked ahead and cleared my schedule in anticipation of working on the RV last week and this coming week, I had time to start learning how to effectively market my businesses. I've been using Pinterest, but it's time to branch out to targeted Facebook ads. I've been avoiding it, but it's time to jump in with both feet and figure out what I'm doing. It'll be a process.

I finally managed to go on a trail run Tuesday morning. I'm still trying to get my sleep schedule back on point. It got derailed when I got sick a month ago, and I've been slowly getting back to where I should be. I can definitely feel the lack of exercise over the last month.

After music lessons on Tuesday we finally made it to our weekly park day. I'd planned on being more regular this past fall, but my broken foot and worsened narcolepsy symptoms meant it never happened. I'm hoping to finally get back in the habit now.

River jumped up to the monkey bars and managed to move forward one bar. He ran over to where I was sitting to tell me what he'd done- he was so proud of himself! I encouraged him to try again and to go further. He ran back and after a number of tries and trips back and forth between me and the monkey bars, he made it all the way across! Then he went and did it again so I could make a video for daddy :) So proud of his hard work and determination!

There was a stream running through the park and the kiddos had lots of fun playing in the water and sand. Ocean especially.

I really need to start carrying towels and extra clothes in the car

I wanted to do a bike ride Wednesday morning, but I was still recovering from Tuesday's run and busy day, so I slept in a smidge before taking Ocean to speech therapy.

I love the woods in spring time

Thursday I managed another trail run. I ran my route from Tuesday backwards, thinking it would be easier. It wasn't- it was much more difficult. Lesson learned :)

Friday we drove the RV to an RV body shop to get an estimate on the work that needs to be done (we'll get it in about a week once they've had time to look at it and figure out how much it will all cost). Mr M also spent some very frustrating time on the phone, trying to convince the insurance company that they should cover the damage. They won't, unfortunately. If we weren't already planning on switching companies, this experience would be the clincher in that decision.

We'd only switched to them because they don't cancel your policy if you rent out your RV, like most companies will. Since we're not renting out the RV anymore (we were concerned about damage having a negative effect on our resale value), we don't need to be with them anymore. In any case, it was a super frustrating experience, but Mr M handled it better than I would have. I was only listening in and I had to leave the house at one point because the guy was being so stupid. He clearly doesn't own an RV or understand standard use patterns. If I'd been the one making the call, I would have been yelling at him.

that's about 55 tons of mulch there

Saturday morning Sunshine and I hauled mulch as part of her troop fundraiser. Mr M's back would not have stood up to hauling bags of mulch, so he stayed home with the boys. Sunshine did a great job helping haul bags and spreading some mulch for an older lady who couldn't do it herself. She definitely worked harder than some of the other, bigger kids. Some of the wetter, heavier bags of mulch weighed almost as much as she did! We did lots of walking back and forth, but I didn't track the exact distance, so I'm just going with 1 mile.

at our last delivery I remembered we hadn't taken any pictures, so this is Sunshine posing for the camera, playing up how heavy the bags were (50-60# average)

In the afternoon we headed to the drive-in theater to watch Avengers: Endgame. We arrived 5 minutes before the gates were supposed to open, only to find that they'd opened an hour earlier because traffic was backed up already. We managed to get a decent spot, and even found some friends who were also there. The kiddos all had fun playing with each other while the grownups chatted.

Ocean really does excel at getting disgustingly dirty.
The chopped up tire mulch in the playground left their mark all over him.

The movie was really good, but it was a long day and I'm still recovering from overdoing it in the morning and not getting enough sleep that night.

waiting for the movie to start

I'm not as sore as I thought I'd be from hauling all those bags of mulch (though Sunshine is), but I am tired. I'm still working on figuring out what my physical exertion limits are and how much is too much. I'm not good at tempering my efforts, but I'm working on it since feeling crummy for several days after working on a project is not optimal.

Mr M met with his VA advocate this week and started the paperwork to get his disability rating. He's also updating all his files so his Reserve unit can start the process to medically retire him. He's been going to physical therapy and accupuncture for the last several months and is getting an epidural shot of some sort this week, but his back is not improving, so it's time to move on. He doesn't have 20 years in yet, which we were trying to hit, but he's close enough that he should be eligible for medical retirement.

Sunday Funny

Guess who's not a big fan of Cadbury Creme eggs?

I walked through the kitchen after our egg hunt last Saturday and found these on the table. Apparently, Ocean is not a fan. Duly noted.

I don't like them either, but Sunshine and Mr M do, which is why I buy them. I won't bother giving Ocean any next year, though.

Weekly Mileage #108 and RV Frustration

Ocean pet the farm dog. He's very cautious around bigger dogs, so this was a big step for him.

This week I continued working on some courses so I can learn new things regarding Instagram and marketing. I also planned out some future posts.

I made a couple of leather notebooks. One was to fill an order and the other is for the kids' music teacher. We've been taking lessons from her for almost 6 years now and I wanted to do something to show our appreciation for her.

Ocean insisted on sitting on the ground so he could watch the chickens eat

Thursday morning the boys and I went on a farm tour with their preschool. We actually did this tour last spring as well. The boys had fun feeding the goats and chickens, helping collect eggs, and checking out the mama pig and her piglets.

kiddos running through a field

Thursday afternoon was Sunshine's height weight followup. While she has gained a couple pounds and grown an inch, it wasn't enough to improve her percentiles, which have actually gotten worse. We're in that narrow window of time before puberty where something can be done if there's a reason other than short genes for her lack of growth. So she's being referred to a specialist (no appointment yet) to do some tests to see if there's anything specific that is wrong. She's not looking forward to the inevitable blood work, but she also wants to get taller....

Friday we were supposed to get hammered by a big storm: lots of rain, tornadoes, flash flooding, the works. County schools let out at noon, Mr M was off work around 3, the boys' preschool egg hunt got rescheduled for next Friday, and Sunshine's service activity that night was canceled. There was some heavy rain around noon, but nothing like what had been forecast- at least not in our area. It's one of those double-edged swords- to cancel everything or not.

kitchen cupboard and microwave removed

Saturday Mr M and I tackled the RV. It was damaged by a stick or branch sometime last winter or spring and it poked a small hole in the roof. That hole was enough to let water in, and there's water damage to the ceiling and driver's side wall. In preparation for this, I'd removed the window coverings (boxes and blinds) and the microwave earlier in the week. I tried to remove the cabinet the microwave was in, but the wiring for the light and stove hood held me back.

vinyl ceiling covering cut and peeled away, showing wet wood of ceiling panel

Mr M worked through the wiring issues (they didn't make it easy for people to remove this cabinet), and we finally removed the cabinet. We also removed the sofa since I plan on painting the walls, and I can't do that with the sofa in place.

trying to remove wet ceiling panels without doing more damage

After removing the cupboard and sofa, we tackled the damaged ceiling panels and wall panels. We figured they were water damaged and would be easy to remove. We'd both watched YouTube videos and looked up stuff online, so we thought we knew what to expect. Only it didn't work out that way. The wallboard above the slide was securely glued to the steel frame, and there's a good 4" behind the framework of the slide that's very difficult to reach. Mr M was able to remove a small portion of the ceiling, but he was afraid of cutting into something important, and the panel seemed to be glued to the styrofoam insulation.

as far as Mr M got- the outer layer of the plywood panel came off, but the inner layer is firmly glued to the insualtion above

After chipping away with such minimal success, we had to face reality. The slides need to come out in order to clean out and replace the damaged wallboard (there's damage above both slides and next to the stove) and we just don't have that capability.

I had a bit more luck removing the wood above the slide, except that I couldn't really reach the 4" or so below that wood-look trim (even after I removed the trim I couldn't get to it)

As much as we prefer to DIY and save money, there are times when we can't do it all, and unfortunately, this is one of those times. We did some googling and found a fairly local RV shop that has good reviews and I'll be calling them today to see what they can do and hopefully get a ballpark on the cost. We know it won't be cheap, and insurance won't pay to fix the damage, only to fix the initial hole. So stupid. How do you know there's a hole in your roof before the damage appears?

the culprit- smaller than the size of a quarter

After that frustrating experience, I went and hauled wood for a couple hours so I'd feel like I'd at least accomplished something. I'm almost done shifting the piles next to the RV, then there's a bit of chainsawing (and more hauling) that needs to be done before I start working down by the shed. Progress!

Ocean helped. Ok, not really. He caught a ride back up the hill after I emptied the trailer :)

We also did our Easter egg hunt. We hid eggs in the lower part of the yard for the boys and eggs in the upper part of the yard for Sunshine. Then Sunshine, River, and I hid eggs for Mr M in the upper part of the yard. No eggs for me this year since sugar and I are not getting along. I still ate a few pieces of candy, but I shouldn't have. The mental fog, fuzziness, and increased sleepiness are just not worth it.

I also spent way too long cleaning out my 18 email inboxes. Excessive yes, but I have several for each business as well as a couple non-business-related ones. I'm at or almost at inbox zero for all of them now. The trick will be to keep them that way. I've been unsubscribing from email lists the last couple weeks and that has helped the inbox situation.

Sunday Funny

Ocean brought me daffodils he picked all by himself :)

At bedtime, Ocean keeps asking for "string cheese to put under my pillow for in the morning."

Ew.

The other night I found a stash of magnatiles under his pillow- he was saving them for the morning.

Another night I found a stash of legos and toy cars in his pillowcase.

I like that he's planning ahead, but I'm pretty sure he would have played with the toys or eaten the cheese a lot sooner than morning.

Re-covered Dining Chairs

starting with the pretty picture because the before picture is soooo bad

I bought two green chairs 6+ years ago from World Market. You can see them in this post about the second kitchen table I built.

While comfortable, the fabric has not weathered well. The kiddos have little by little picked most of the outer green layer off the inner layer. And then they spill stuff all over them. They've been looking very gross for way too long.

We were going to buy new chairs, but in the interest of saving our budget, I decided to recover the chairs instead. They really are quite comfortable to sit on. I thought about buying fabric, but then I rembered I had some upholstery fabric that I'd bought to recover a wingback chair. I never got around to doing it, and now I don't plan on doing so until we move into our next house, so the fabric was just sitting around.

While I used fabric we already had, I know it's not the greatest for kitchen chairs. Outdoor fabric would have been better, but I was trying to do this without spending any money. Since the fabric isn't intended for dining chairs, I am a bit concerned about how the gray fabric will survive what the kiddos do to it. I bought some clear vinyl to go over the seat portion of the chairs, but it only cost a couple dollars. That was the only expense for this project since I had the fabric, staples, and thread already.

Rather than screwing the seat bottom to the frame, they used pieces of green webbing to hold it in place. Spoiler: it was a pain to try to get them reattached tightly.

After removing all the staples that were in the way, recovering the seat was fairly straightforward. I just wrapped the fabric around the seat and stapled it in place.

Before I attached the seat to the frame, I also wrapped the clear vinyl over the gray fabric and stapled it in place. I do have my doubts about how long it will take for the vinyl to crack and get peeled off, but something is better than nothing.

Once the seats were done, I took them downstairs and sewed covers for the back cushions. They're not perfect, but they turned out pretty well. The fabric had a weird plastic-y backing that gummed up my needle and was a pain to sew through. I very quickly got to the point where I was just trying to get them to look decent.

There are seams on the sides and top, and then staples hold it all in place on the underside.

And one last before and after:

So much better!

Weekly Mileage #107 and the Carport Clearing

I still wasn't feeling great most of the week, but my voice is mostly back and I did get a lot done, though not as much exercising as I wanted.

This winter has been so much healthier than the last 4 or 5 winters (no every-other-week colds because the boys brought home germs from nursery, and no flu and strep like we got last winter), which I am very grateful for. But I'm also kind of annoyed at how long this cold has hung around. It wasn't until Friday of this week that I really started feeling better- almost three weeks after I first started feeling crummy.

I finished recovering the kitchen chairs that I started last week. I'll share pics later this week.

I dragged the kids out for a hike on Thursday despite us all feeling a bit under the weather. We felt better after getting out in the fresh air, as I knew we would. When we got home, we spent a few minutes cleaning up bits of trampoline mat that had been scattered around the yard. The trampoline is six years old now, I think, and the mat over the springs is brittle. The boys (ours and the neighbors) figured this out and have destroyed the mat bit by bit over the last 6 months or so. Bits of teal canvas and pink foam have been making our yard look like a junk heap.

We got that all cleaned up, and now need to buy a new safety net. One hole led to another, and now the net is useless. Ahh, life with destructive little boys....

this is what it looked like a couple months ago before I started clearing things out

Saturday morning Sunshine and I were up early so I could take her to a Scout activity. I came home and did some more chainsawing and clearing wood and brush. I've got the biggest logs cut to length and everything cleared from the space where we'll put the carport. Well, everything that can be moved without a bobcat to help. It looks so much better!

what it looks like now

There are two other spots in the yard that need some chainsawing done and wood and brush moved, but this was definitely the worst spot and was holding us back from renting the bobcat and doing more site work. That will happen in May, and we'll also be bringing in a mobile sawmill to get those logs cut into planks and a mantel piece for our fireplace.

I did all the loading and unloading of the wood into the lawn tractor trailer, other than a tiny bit of help from River. Definitely got my workout for the day. Sunshine was at her Scout activity and Mr M was fixing yet another hole in our plumbing, which is why they weren't helping me.

We've come to the conclusion that we will have to replace all the plumbing before we sell the house. All the PEX joints are failing, causing small leaks that are only found once they've soaked through the drywall. Such a pain on several levels, and not covered by insurance (we've checked).

~~~~~
Now that I've finished setting up everything for my second blog, I have a bit more time to get caught up on other things, like some marketing courses I purchased but never had time to finish. It's good because I feel like I'm in a position to act upon the stuff I'm learning, which hasn't been the case in the past.
I've been busy batching some blog posts for the coming weeks for my other blogs. I have a couple more to finish up, and then I'll have all my posts for the rest of the month ready and scheduled. This will give me the time to get started working on the RV. We had a branch fall and poke a hole in the roof sometime last spring or summer and cause some water damage to the ceiling and wall. We didn't have time or energy to do anything sooner, but now I do. I want to get as much done as possible before it gets too hot and humid, and it needs to be done before our road trip this summer, so I need to get started.
Since we'll be selling the RV in the next year or so, we have to make the repair job look as nice as possible, which means we'll most likely end up painting the entire interior of the RV. It'll be worth it in the end, but we'll have to pull out some of the cabinets and as much furniture as we can so we can sand and paint the walls and cabinets. Not necessarily difficult, but time-consuming and fiddly.
Updated Dresser
Above is the lingerie dresser I updated and repurposed as a filing cabinet. Because actual filing cabinets are ugly and this is in our living room.
I found it on craigslist, but forgot to take a picture until I had already started sanding. And yes, I was too lazy to put the drawers back in for the picture. But you get the idea. It was a boring, uninspired brown dresser.
I lightly sanded it all over, then primed it. Then I painted it blue. I ended up having to do two coats because the first coat was a little too... intense. I toned down the next coat with some black paint, but it still came out on the bright side. Though it looks brighter in the picture than in reality.
In any case, I wasn't too worried, because I had plans to use a dark wax on top, and I knew it would tone down the color a lot.
I also painted the brass hardware with oil rubbed bronze paint before reattaching them.
It's actually really hard to photograph and get an accurate idea of the color. The first pic in the post is close, but a little grayer than in reality. The one below is close, though also not quite right. Regardless of how the color does or doesn't look, I'm happy with how it turned out and am looking forward to keeping my papers better organized.
Weekly Mileage #106 and the Day I Lost My Voice
pretty flower we found on our hike in the forest with my dad last week
Last week I mentioned that I was sick and had mostly lost my voice Saturday and Sunday. Monday I woke without a voice at all. This made answering the phone fun, since I took the CRV in to get the muffler looked at and they had to call to let me know what was wrong, and then again to let me know we could pick it up. (we ended up replacing the muffler)
Tuesday my voice wasn't quite as bad (ie, there was a small amount of sound when I talked), but my cold was worse. Usually after a week I'm feeling better, but that has not been the case with this cold. My voice has gradually returned, but it's still a bit croaky, more than a week after I first started losing it. I've never had laryngitis hang around this long.
The good thing in all this was that it was spring break for the local schools, so the only thing I had to cancel was music lessons Tuesday morning. We did have nature group Wednesday afternoon, but everything else was on break, which made for an easier, less stressful week.
Tuesday evening Mr M had his sleep study. He doesn't have the results yet, but they never woke him up to put a C-Pap on, so we're fairly confident he doesn't have sleep apnea.
Despite feeling crummy because of this never-ending cold, I did have a productive week. I didn't get any mileage in, but I did finish setting things up for my second blog. I handed things off to my Pinterest VA so she can start pinning the posts and driving traffic to it.
I finished the dresser I was working on last week, and I'll share pics later this week.
I started reupholstering our two padded dining chairs. The seats of both are done, but I have to sew the slipcovers for the backs still. I'll share pictures of those next week probably, once they're done.
I finally finished cutting down all my race shirts to make into quilts. I've enough for two quilts so far- one for all the races I've done since I started running again after Carys was born, and one for my 40 by 40 goal. I can start piecing together the first one, but I'll need to do some more work on the 40 by 40 quilt before I piece it together. I plan on embroidering the type of race (glow, trail, road, etc) and the number (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) on each shirt.
what our fireplace has looked like for the last 6 or so years
Saturday night I got a hair up my nose while rearranging rugs and furniture and took a hammer to the 2x4 base in front of the gas fireplace in the living room. It's been bare wood since I removed the nasty black slate that used to surround the fireplace six and a half years ago.
We'll soon be cutting the mantle piece (finally), and then we can finish the fireplace, so I've been thinking about what we'll do with it. We won't be leaving that awkward step, so since my tools were out, I started whaling on the frame. Whoever built it used 4" nails, so it was a pain to pull apart, but I managed it in the end.
These boards are still a bit taller than the surrounding flooring, but it's much better than what was there.
I need to dig out a board to place across the front, under the fireplace.
In between all that, we watched General Conference and enjoyed some warmer weather and intermittent sunshine.
March Mileage
early morning run
The first half of March I was feeling good and I got some good mileage in. The second half of the month I struggled to with my energy levels as I paid the price for not eating properly. Trail running and my first 5k of the year also figured into my month. I'm excited to do more trail running in the coming days, especially as the weather warms up and I don't have to layer up so much.
March mileage:
1 treadmill workout + 2 hikes + 1 race + 4 outdoor runs + 2 outdoor walks + 1 bike workout + 0 kayak outings = 46.02 miles
52 hike challenge: 9 hikes
365 mile challenge: 60.0 bike miles + 34.87 outdoor foot miles + 11.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 106.02 miles
February mileage:
1 treadmill workout + 3 hikes +1 outdoor runs + 1 snowshoe walk + 3 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 42.40 miles
52 hike challenge: 7 hikes
365 mile challenge:  50.0 bike miles + 18.00 outdoor foot miles + 7.15 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
total miles: 75.15 miles
January mileage:
2 treadmill workouts + 4 hikes + 1 outside walk + 2 bike workouts + 0 kayak outings = 32.75 miles
52 hike challenge: 4 hikes
365 mile challenge:  20.0 bike miles + 8.3 outdoor foot miles + 4.45 indoor foot miles + 0 kayak miles
Weekly Mileage #105 and a Visit from my Dad
the girls received their neckerchiefs at their troop meeting this week
Monday we finally drove over the mountain to the Scout Shop and bought Sunshine's Scout uniform and handbook. She'd been attending troop meetings for almost 2 months, so it was past time, I just hadn't had the time to make the drive there and back.
Tuesday I took my laptop in to get fixed. That evening I finally stained the top of the desk that I built in the fall. I need to add the support arms inside to keep the top from slamming down, but it looks so much better now.
You can't tell from this angle, but this tree extended out over the water. Ocean climbed it and was going to keep going until I told him to turn around and come back. He did, but then tried to slide off the tree a smidge too early and ended up sliding down the bank into the river (thankfully a shallow spot), where he got soaked. He can be way too fearless for his own good.
Wednesday Sunshine had her orthodontist appointment. She's getting the last two stubborn teeth pulled in about a month (the earliest they could get us in), and the rest of her teeth have finally made enough progress coming in. In June we'll go back and find out when she can get her braces on, how much it'll cost, and how long it will take to straighten her teeth. We've been working up to this for the last six years or so, and it'll be nice to finally get her braces on. I'd hoped to have them all done before she hit the awkward early teen years, but that definitely didn't happen.
Since I was without my laptop, I took advantage of the unexpected free time to finally sand and prime a lingerie dresser I found on craigslist not too long ago. It's a tall, narrow dresser with seven drawers and I'll be using it instead of a file cabinet to keep all my paperwork under control.
Ocean was throwing rocks behind him, over his head (you can see splashes behind him)
Thursday I painted the dresser. It took several coats, but I like how it turned out. I came down with a cold on Monday evening and it got worse throughout the week, so I ran out of energy and didn't quite finish it yet.
Friday we went for a hike at our local trails park with some friends. The weather turned out to be beautiful and all the kids had fun playing in the river and exploring the banks. Both boys ended up soaked and sandy, but they had fun. We'll dress a bit more appropriately next time.
Dad was in the area(ish) for some work training, and he drove down Friday afternoon to see us before  flying home Saturday afternoon. Right after he arrived we drove Sunshine to her first Scout campout. Her troop is the one most organized one in the area, so even though it's a little farther away than we'd like, she and a friend from church both attend it. It's attached to a large, established, well-run boys troop, which is proving beneficial: experienced leadership and established patterns for helping the youth progressive through their advancements.
checking out the cool growth
Saturday morning before Dad had to leave we went for a hike through the old growth forest behind Montpelier. Dad was a bit taken aback at the trees that are just left to decay when they fall as part of their forestry plan. But we don't have nearly the fire hazards and wildfire danger they see out west, so it's not as big an issue here. Dead trees rot pretty quickly in our high humidity; if you want firewood to dry out, you have to be really careful about how you store it or it will decay where it sits.
River's hand in his pocket :)
Sunshine returned from her campout Saturday evening tired and sore, but ready for her next campout.
That cold that hung around and got worse also made me start losing my voice Friday evening. Saturday and Sunday it was mostly non-existent, aside from some hoarse squeaking. Lots of fun.
