Saturday I ran a trail 5k through a vineyard, in costume. It was advertised as having rolling hills, but that was a lie. There was lots of hills, and they weren't rolling. So yeah, it was more challenging than I expected. I did manage to run the first mile before the hills knocked me down a notch and I started walking.
Two years ago I ran a Halloween 5k in full Jedi Knight gear, and decided then and there that I needed to come up with a more running friendly costume. That Halloween race wasn't run last year (or this, for that matter), so I had to find a new Halloween race that I could wear a costume in. I found one at a vineyard in the area, but as I mentioned, it was a very hilly course. And randomly, the shirt fits really well, but it has "I run for wine" on the back :( Guess that's what I get for running a race that offered wine as the post-race refreshments. Yeah, you could get a glass of wine, but there were no bananas or oranges to be seen. Don't think I'll be running this one again.
Back to where I was going with the costume issue. Since I didn't run a Halloween race last year, I didn't worry about the costume thing until this year. And this year I opted for an R2D2 shirt and hat, and a matching sparkle shirt. Since it was on the cool side, I layered navy capri tights and a navy long sleeve shirt under the t-shirt and skirt. It was a perfect outfit for running and I'll be wearing it again, minus the hat. I almost never wear a hat or gloves while running, because I overheat, and it was not cold enough to make wearing a hat comfortable. So the hat will be staying home unless it's below freezing. And if I can convince Sunshine to give it back- she's decided she needs to have it and is wearing it all the time.
I did hills on the treadmill Wednesday night and then hiked some hills with the kiddos Thursday morning. Both good workouts, but my legs were a bit more tired than I would have liked given how challenging the course was. I need to pay more attention to the difficulty of the hikes we go on just before races.
I also broke my pinky toe Monday. My spatial awareness isn't great and this wasn't the first time I've caught a protruding corner hard enough to break a pinky toe. Both have been broken multiple times. It hurt, but didn't give me too many problems until Thursday. When we got home after our hike my toe was hurting and it's been aching ever since. The uneven surfaces we covered during our hike were not good for my poor battered toe. Oops. It didn't interfere with my running, though I could tell that it wasn't happy when I was running diagonally up a hill. It's feeling better today though.
I ran 3.03 miles in 37:06.
1st mile- 10:52
2nd mile- 13:30
3rd mile- 12:34
Last week's mileage:
I did 4 workouts and had 2 work days. I had planned on staining the treehouse Monday but it was too windy. Wind + spraying stain = recipe for disaster. Wednesday I was able to do some staining, but I ran out of stain before finishing the job. I got more stain on Thursday after our hike, but it started raining just as we got to Lowes. So no staining on Thursday. Luckily the rain was pretty light, the breeze wasn't too bad, and I was able to finish staining the treehouse Friday. More on that soon.
We hiked new trails at our local trail park. It was hilly and more challenging than our usual routes, but we got to walk along a stream and we found a really old car in the middle of the woods. At 2.3 miles this was the longest hike we've done at this park, and River was dragging towards the end, but he made it!
Monday- treadmill walk & run 3.61 miles all together, ran 1 of those miles
Wednesday- stained part of the treehouse, treadmill walk hills 4.07 miles
Thursday- hiked 2.3 miles
Friday- finished staining the rest of the treehouse
Saturday- Halloween 5k - 3.03 miles
total miles for the week: 13.01 miles
