Homeschool Day at Montpelier

reading with James and Dolly Madison

We went to Montpelier recently- they had reduced rates for Homeschool Day, so we decided to go explore. We've been to Monticello a couple times, but this was our first visit to Montpelier.

James Madison was a friend of Thomas Jefferson and it was interesting to see the similarities and differences in their homes.

We took the house tour, which was quite interesting. One of the upstairs room has various cut-aways so you can see how the walls and ceiling were constructed, plus there are remnants of various remodels and objects found in the walls.

It was a gorgeous day, so we made sure we spent time outside as well. The grounds are quite expansive- we only explored a fraction of what's there. We did get a chance to check out the walled garden, the old growth forest, and the frames of smokehouses and slave homes.

There were also some old-fashioned games for the kids to try on the back lawn. LMS enjoyed trying to figure out how to play with the hoops.

In the end, she decided it was easier to keep the hoop moving with just her hand.

Have you played with a hoop before? It's harder than it looks!
