River and Ocean in blue at the front |
Wednesday we had a nature group hike, but the boys were misbehaving (running far ahead of the group and ignoring me when I asked them not to do so), so we turned back early. We missed out on playing in the river, but that's life sometimes.
We spent a good portion of the week finishing things up and getting read for our road trip. Since we'd taken so much out of the RV when we found the water damage, there was more than usual to put back. So it took a bit longer than normal to load up the RV, but I started early enough it wasn't a problem.
We were ready to and we hit the road Friday evening after Mr M got home from work. We like getting a few hours in that first evening of a road trip- it makes such a difference the next morning. No delays in getting on the road, because we're already there.
Saturday and Sunday we drove all day. Sunday evening we stopped for Mr M to do timesheets (part of the agreement for him taking 3 weeks off work), then hit the road again. The skies were looking threatening, but we didn't think too much of it.
We should have listened to the radio (we weren't) or turned our weather radio on (which we brought in case we needed, but never used, though we should have). We ran into a storm with 60 mph winds, rain, and constant lightning (the skies looked like there were strobe lights going off). There was no where to pull off, so we just drove slowly down the interstate. We finally found a rest stop, but there were "no overnight stopping" signs posted. We waited awhile to see if the storm would move on, and it did lighten up a bit, so we got back on the freeway. There was still a lot of rain and wind, but we did eventually move past it all and we spent the night in a truck stop.
lightning in the distance |
Definitely a scary situation with those wind gusts. The lightning never got too close, thankfully. We're working on being more aware of what weather conditions we could encounter as we drive so we're more prepared and can choose when to hunker down and when to try to out run the storm.
