In scoping out local race calendars I found a Labor Day 5k in the same town I ran the glow 5k in the spring. It claimed to be walker-friendly, so I signed Sunshine and myself up and planned out how to wake up everyone super early in the morning.
Thankfully, the race was indeed walker-friendly, and we weren't the only ones with kiddos in a jogging stroller. I even spied a triple jogger!
Sunshine doesn't love doing races, but she humors me when I do sign her up for one. I'm careful not to have her do too many, and I keep hoping she'll start enjoying them more. For this race I let her dictate when we ran, though when we walked I made sure we didn't go too slowly. We jogged a little at the beginning, but walked most of the rest of it. We did run into the finish, though Sunshine had to be encouraged to do so. She doesn't quite see the point of running through the finish :)
Sunshine did really well, though I credit the fact that she got distracted and started planning an elaborate treehouse made of willow trees. We passed a large willow tree that sparked her imagination and she talked the whole time we walked. Being distracted meant there wasn't the usual whining and complaining, so I'll count it as a win.
The weather was perfect for running- clear and in the mid-50's. The course is actually flat, which is super hard to find around here. It's run in the same neighborhoods as the 5k glow run, but the course is a little different. The glow run had a couple hills and this one didn't. I'd like to do this one next year and see what kind of PR I can get. I'm pretty sure I can get a good one on this course.
We completed 3.07 miles in 46:54. I didn't have expectations for a finish time since Sunshine was a part of the equation, but we did pretty good. I think the last time Sunshine and I did a 5k together was the Halloween 5k in 2013, and we completed that in 50:00.
