Predict Your Time 5k Recap

slightly overcast and humid morning

This race was billed as a "predict your time, staggered start race". Those who predicted slower times would start before those who predicted faster times, with the goal of everyone finishing around the same time.

It was a free race with no preregistration, only race-day registration. The only problem was that when we arrived, we couldn't find the race organizers. After trying to contact them without success, we all decided to run anyway, but without the staggered start. It was a small group- maybe 15-20 people. Everyone timed themselves and cheered in those who finished after them. Despite the lack of race officials, I'm still counting this as a race for my 40 by 40 goal.

I would not have gotten the prize for closest predicted time. I had decided on 34:20 during the drive over, but was 3:21 slower. Way off. My pitiful mileage base just couldn't pull me through the full 3.1 miles. I ran almost all of the first two miles but did a lot of walking in the third mile.

The course itself was pretty good, no terrible hills. It was a mix of bike path and dirt and gravel single track trails, so it wasn't too hard on my body. I'm just out of shape still.

I ran 3.16 miles in 37:41. In my defense, it was also hot and humid. We were running in the morning, along a river, under the trees. Individually those circumstances cause increased humidity, but if you combine them all, it makes the humidity so much worse.
1st mile: 11:05
2nd mile: 12:18
3rd mile: 12:42

Last week Sunshine had day camp (she's attended every summer since 2012) town so I took advantage of being in town already to hit a couple of trails. Two workouts plus the 5k gave me a total of 9.41 miles for the week, which is much better than the paltry mileage I've squeezed in the last couple weeks. Hopefully I can continue to increase my weekly mileage.

I logged 4.25 miles pushing boys in the stroller up the mountain and back down. I jogged 1 mile of the down portion because I was feeling good. The hill work is good for me, though I had the thought that working on the chicken coop was also good: I did a lot of squats while building the coop and run, so now I'm wondering if they played more of a role in my easier hill running than pushing the boys up the mountain.

I do like all the boardwalks on this trail

I logged another 2 miles on a bike path in town, pushing the boys in Phil. I jogged a total of 1.25 miles of the 2. It rained the whole time, but while I got pretty wet, the boys managed to stay fairly dry. I like running in the rain, so I enjoyed the experience.

at least all the humidity we sweat through gives us lush greenery to enjoy

I've been trying to figure out a way to run outside more and I think I may have hit on a viable option. I can run with the boys in the stroller, but Sunshine can't keep up with me when I'm running, even if she wanted to, which she doesn't. However, she does like riding her bike, so I'm going to see how she does riding her bike while I run with the boys. The trick will be squeezing her bike and the stroller into the back of the CRV. If I recall correctly, the last time I put her bike back there it was a tight fit.
